JANET MANU

Epilogue

The Name Beyond the Stars

Far beyond the world, something watched.

It had no face, and it had no throne. It watched as the stars watch, not with eyes, but with presence. It had seen the new Covenant change the shape of reality. It had seen the Gates cease to be locks. It had seen the gods surrender their crowns, and the Titans step out of their chains, and human beings, small and brief and astonishing, given a voice at last.

But there were still places beyond the known worlds.

Places where old civilizations waited in the dark, their lamps trimmed, their doors ajar. Places where forgotten names remained, folded away like letters in a drawer.

And in one of those places, a child opened a book.

It was an enormous old book, bound in gray cloth, its pages the color of bone. The child sat cross-legged on a cold stone floor beneath a window with no glass. A wind turned the leaves.

The first page was blank.

The second page contained seven lines.

The third contained eight.

The child turned to the final page.

A name appeared.

ELIAS VALE.

Then another name appeared beneath it. It was written in a hand no one had ever seen, in letters no one could read. It was a name that had never belonged to a god. It had never belonged to a Titan. It belonged to something older.

The child smiled.

"The Covenant has begun again."

Outside, the stars moved.

And somewhere between them, a door opened.

You have reached the end of Book One.
